Sesame

Sesame allergy is a type of food allergy that occurs when an individual’s immune system reacts adversely to proteins found in sesame seeds. It is a common allergen and can cause a range of mild to severe reactions in susceptible individuals. Symptoms of sesame allergy can manifest within minutes to a couple of hours after ingestion or contact with sesame products.

Mild reactions may include skin rashes, hives, itching, and mild swelling. However, some individuals may experience more severe reactions, such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, tightness in the throat, and a drop in blood pressure. In extreme cases, anaphylaxis can occur, which is a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention.

Avoiding sesame and sesame-containing products is the primary way to manage this allergy. Careful reading of food labels, restaurant menus, and ingredient lists is crucial to identify potential hidden sources of sesame. Cross-contamination is also a concern, so individuals with sesame allergies must be cautious when eating at establishments that handle sesame products.
